Clinical management of urolith in a mare

A mare was presented with haematuria, colic, stranguria and micturition which increased just after exercise. Diagnosis of urolith was based on history, signs, physical examination and inability to pass urinary catheter. Mare was treated under standing anaesthesia using Xylazine hydrochloride and Butorophanol tartarate. Manual removal of urolith was undertaken. Urinary bladder lavage, post-operative management with NSAID, diuretics, antibiotics, Vitamin C and urinary acidification lead to recovery and no re-occurrence. The urolith measured 9 inche in diameter, 4.5 inches in length and weighed 500gms.
