Liver Enzyme Activity in Dogs Infected with Babesia canis

Abstract

The study assesed the alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine amino transferase (ALT), aspartate amino transferase (AST), Total bilirubin, Total protein, Albumin, Globulin and A: G ratio in anaemic dogs infected with B. canis. Blood was collected before treatment from naturally infected dogs (n=8) diagnosed positive for babesiosis by peripheral blood smear examination. Blood and serum samples were collected from positive cases for further investigation. The mean values of ALP, ALT, AST, TB and A: G in infected dogs were 178.00±21.77 IU/L, 97.00±19.09 IU/L, 139.38±29.00 IU/L, 00.94±00.10 mg/dl and 00.70±00.05, respectively which were significantly higher than healthy control group (n=8). These abnormalities resulted due to liver damage in infected anemic dogs.
