Holter monitoring electrocardiography in thoroughbred horses at rest and during exercise

Abstract

The heart rate and rhythm of fifteen (15) healthy thoroughbred horses of different ages and sex was analyzed continuously for ten (10) hours by holter monitoring. The horses were evaluated at rest using five channel digital Holter recorder. The minimum heart rate range recorded was 26-39 beats/min (bpm) and maximum heart rate range was 41-64 bpm. During rest, normal sinus rhythm was recorded in seven (7) horses. However, second degree atrio-ventricular (AV) block was detected in four (4) horses and sinus tachycardia was detected in other four horses. Exercise holter monitoring was done in ten (10) healthy thoroughbred horses. During exercise, sinus tachycardia, atrial premature complexes and ventricular premature complexes were detected.
