Prevalence study of gastro-intestinal parasites in horses

Abstract

A prevalence study of gastrointestinal parasitism in horses was undertaken in three districts of Karnataka, India. Out of 692 faecal samples screened, 220 (31.80%) animals were positive for gastrointestinal parasites. The parasites with high prevalence rate were Parascaris equorum ova 101 (14.59%) followed by Strongyle 83 (11.99%); Gasterophilus ova 11 (1.59%); Eimeria leukarti oocysts 3 (0.43%); Oxyuris equi 2 (0.29%) and Strongyloides 2 (0.29%). Mixed infestation of Parascaris equorum and strongyle was found in 18 samples (2.60%). The prevalence in unorganised farms (80.30%) was higher as compared to organised farms (26.68%). The prevalence rate of strongyle infection in organised and unorganised farms were 7.51 and 54.54 percent with mean EPG of 133.33±16.67 to 885±63.21 and 366.67±96.57 to 1216.67±441.69 respectively followed by P. equorum (14.70%) with mean EPG of 316.66±133.65 to 1681.82±96.78 and 13.64 percent with mean EPG of 158.33±41.66 to 1491.67±75 in organised and unorganised farms respectively.
