Abstract

The study was carried out to assess different fodders and their effect on incidences of colic in horses in sub-tropical climatic conditions. It was observed that groundnut straw (Arachis hypogaea haulms), wheat straw (Triticuma estivum straw), Jawarkadbi (Sorghum biocolors tovers) and bazrakadbi (Pennisetum glaucum stovers) were the commonly used dry fodders. While green jawar, green lucerne and green bazra were the main green fodders. Percent incidences of colic in Indian horses were found more recorded from developed countries, where straws are not used for feeding horses. Highest percent incidence of colic were found associated with wheat straw, pearl millets (green) and sorghum (green) fodders in breeding horses.
