Therapeutic management of nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism in a horse

Abstract

A male horse was presented with history of swollen face for last one month. The animal was fed with unpolished rice diet. Clinical examination revealed bilateral hard swelling in maxillary region. Radiography revealed bony involvement. Serum biochemistry revealed altered Calcium and Phosphorus levels and elevated alkaline phosphatase levels .The case was diagnosed as nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism and was managed with Sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate and owner was advised to avoid unpolished rice diet.
