Surgical Management of Rumen Evisceration in a Buffalo

A traumatic ruminal evisceration in a buffalo was managed surgically. The lacerated wound and exposed rumen was cleaned with normal saline and examined thoroughly for any perforation and contamination. Buffalo was sedated with Butorphanol @ 0.2 mg per kg b. wt. and Midazolam @ 0.2 mg per kg b. wt.. Rumen was carefully reduced into abdominal cavity. The tear of peritoneum and muscle was closed with non-absorbable suture material in overlapping pattern followed by subcutaneous suture in continuous pattern. Skin was closed with polyamide in horizontal mattress pattern. Animal recovered fully after ten days.
