Diagnosis of Gall Bladder Mucocele, Calculi and Bile Peritonitis in a Dog

A English cocker spaniel was presented with hematuria, lethargy and passing grey coloured pasty stools. Physical examination revealed normal vitals, icteric mucous membranes, no pain or organomegaly on palpation. Blood picture revealed anemia and elevated liver values. Ultrasonographic examination showed hypo-echogenicity of liver, distended gall bladder with anechoic content and two hyperechoic intensities of acoustic shadowing. Severe bile peritonitis due to perforation of the bile duct was observed on exploratory laparotomy. Liver showed cirrhotic and nodular changes whereas the kidneys were shrunken and fibrotic. Histopathological studies revealed cystic hyperplasia of the biliary epithelia, periportal fibrosis and chronic inflammatory changes in liver. Kidney sections revealed glomerular atrophy and fibrotic changes.
