Diagnosis and management of diabetic ketoacidosis in a pug

Diabetic ketoacidosis in an unconscious male adult Pug is reported and discussed. Detailed investigations revealed increased levels of fasting blood glucose (595 mg/dl), blood urea nitrogen (60 mg/dl), serum creatinine (3.6 mg/dl), ALT (280 U/L), SAP (1700 IU/L), cholesterol (450 mg/dl) and cTn-I (0.26 ng/ml); presence of glucose (++++), ketones (++++), protein (++), bacteria and pus cells in urine; hepatomegaly and ST segment depression (0.15 mV) with sinus tachycardia (180 bpm with regular R-R interval of 0.34 sec) confirming diabetic ketoacidosis with cardiac, hepatic and renal insult. Therapy with normal saline, biphasic isophane insulin, Vitamin B complex and Enrofloxacin showed marked improvement.
