Intramedullary Pinning and External Co-Optation for Management of Tibial Fracture in a Rabbit

Abstract

A rabbit was presented with history of left hindleg being struck within the cage two days back and inability to walk properly. On physical examination, non-weight bearing lameness in left hindlimb with painful swelling and crepitation at distal tibial region were found. C-arm imaging revealed simple, complete, oblique and over-riding, distal 1/3rd diaphyseal fracture. Under general anesthesia, fracture was surgically corrected using K-wire intramedullary pin and external cooptation was undertaken using icecream sticks. With regular wound dressing and good post-operative care, pet uneventfully recovered.
