Toxicology is the branch of pharmacology which deals with the study of harmful effects of drugs and other chemical administered in over recommended (toxic) doses on the biological system. Toxicity of a substance is dose related since a substance at low dose is without effect; may produce deleterious effects at some higher dose. Thus poison may be defined as “ Any substance which taken inwardly in a very small dose, or apply in any kind of manner to a living body, depraves the health, or entirely destroys life”. (Orfila, 1821).
