Abstract

An adult Lhasa Apso female dog was presented at the Referral Polyclinic of the Institute for the treatment of persisting loss of appetite and vomiting. Detailed examination revealed weakness, dyspnoea, anorexia, vomiting, black tarry faeces, polydipsia, slightly pale mucus membranes, salivation, pain on palpation of liver area, petechial haemorrhages on the gingival mucus membrane, a higher packed cell volume, lower platelet counts, ill defined accumulation of gravity dependent echogenic particles within the enlarged gallbladder, enlarged and diffusely hypoechoic liver, increased ALT (96.34 U/L), SAP (82.41 U/L) and g-GT (6.78 U/L) and bilirubin (total 1.3 mg%; direct 0.7 mg%). The dog responded well to intravenous fluid (5% DNS), metoclopramide, ursodeoxycholic acid and silymarin therapy.
