In order to study the presence of mycoflora with special reference to dermatophytes on the coat of owned cats, living in the cities of Yazd, Esfahan and Shahrekord (central areas of Iran), 53 hair samples were collected by using the tooth brush technique. The specimens were collected and processed by routine mycological methods for dermatophytes and saprophytic fungi.
A total of 21 dermatophytes (39.62%) isolated. over a one year period (March 2007 to April 2008). The most commonly species were: Trichophyton schoenleinii (11.32%), Trichophyton verrucosum (9.43%), Microsporum nanum (7.54%) and Trichophyton mentagrophytes (5.66%). Saprophytic fungi were found as Penicillium spp. (22.26%), Zygomycetes (18.87%), Nigrospora and Aspergillus spp. each (17%) and Cheladosporium (5.66%).
