Diagnosis and treatment of Trypanosomiasis in Equines : Report of Fifteen Cases

Fifteen horses (male 9 and female 6), aged from 3 to 6 years, referred at the hospital from surrounding areas with the complaint of weakness, erratic fever, exertion and weariness despite normal appetite for couple of days were found positive for Trypanosoma evansi. Fresh thick smears prepared from peripheral blood and/or lymph node aspirates revealed the presence of Trypanosoma evansi flagellates in 10 horses. However, 05 horses which failed to revealed the presence of T. evansi flagellates on first occasion did reveal T. evansi flagellates in their 2^nd thick blood smears prepared from peripheral blood after infusion of one liter of 5 % Dextrose. The horses responded well to diminazine aceturate (5.0 mg/kg b.wt. divided into two equal doses given im at 4 hours interval), pheniramine maleate 10 ml im 30 – 40 min prior to each dose of diminazine, 5 % DNS (4 liter) iv given 2 hr after 2^nd dose of diminazine for 2- 3 days and Inj. B complex - Tribivet 5 ml im daily for 4 days.
