For its survival in the changing academic, social and economic environment, the library has to adjust in several areas such as collection development, range of services and organisation of material. Like a growing organism, which it is according to Ranganathan's fifth Law of Library Science, the library needs to adapt to the demands of the environment. The profound changes brought about by information technology in the whole information management sector are posing numerous challenges to the library. Even the survival of the library as is traditionally identified is questioned in some quarters. That may not come true, but the very functioning of the library is bound to be different. To study the impact of information technology on the library and how best can the library adapt is the subject of this paper.
