IT use in academic environment in Kerala: A survey

Abstract

The goal of the series of studies is to examine through a survey the need a theoretical foundation and potentialities of Knowmatics and knowledge technology. The objectives of the present study are: 1) to examine the effectiveness of Information Technology (IT) in knowledge processing; and 2) to examine the need and possibility of developing a new technology for knowledge processing. Based on the findings of the survey suggests the following: to give training and provide experience in advanced web technologies like data mining/XML/Semantic web, etc.; to establish a new data mining/knowledge management technology considered as helpful in processing information into knowledge; conduct awareness programmes about the need to develop new algorithms or software for knowledge processing different from those used for data processing; and to include the subjects “Structure and development of knowledge”, “Information economy” and “Information society” in the educational courses for information professionals.
