In a multilingual country like India information services and exchange need to be supported by databases in the native languages, single language and multilingual. Transliteration and translation of Indian language texts and bibliographical details of documents into Roman script and English are not adequate and not conducive to the promotion of the use of native languages in information exchange and services. Some of the problems and issues in developing databases in native languages used by small communities are discussed taking the Tulu language as an example. The need for developing and applying transliteration and bibliographic standards, thesauri and lexicons to support information work and service in a single language and in multilingual environments is discussed. Recommends support for cooperative research projects to find solutions to the problems.
