Abstract

Application of Informatics has contributed to significant improvements in the preservation, documentation and administration of cultural assets. Authors outline the role Informatics played in the evolution and growth of Cultural Heritage Information Systems (CHIS) emphasizing their importance, difficulties, and potential future paths. Use ICT, Special DBMS programmes, Virtual Museum Builder (VMB), Augmented Reality (AR) Programmes Virtual Reality Packages, 3D scanning, modelling, and visualization techniques used for managing heritage assets in an organized form, along with the various specialized systems that have been developed so far and their unique characteristics are discussed. There are numerous ways in which Informatics is used to manage cultural assets, including connecting historical and technical information related to heritage assets, their preservation, education, and tourism. Difficulties in designing and implementing CHIS, such as data collection and management, standardization, and interoperability are also discussed. Authors view that cooperation of stakeholders is essential to achieve the vision of CHIS and opine that to create comprehensive plans, regulations, and standards for the efficient implementation of CHIS, it is necessary for cultural heritage organizations, governments, scholars, technological specialists, and the general public to collaborate. The study points out the need to find a balance between digital and analogue cultural heritage experiences as technology develops. Authors also opine that continuous scaling up of technologies for CHIS is essential to ensure conservation and control of heritage assets using CHIS.
