Abstract

This paper is the exact version of Dr. S R Ranganathan's presentation at Second International Study Conference held at Hotel Prins Hamlet, Elsinore, Denmark, 14th to 18th September 1964.It was included in the proceedng volume 'Classification Research' edited by Pauline Atherton which was published by FID/CR Committee on Classification Research in co-operation with the Danish Centre For Documentation, Munksgaard, Copenhagen. There were numerous later versions of this paper but here we publish the orginal text of 1964. After defining the relevant terms the paper traces out the progress in the firstcentury of the Classification in Pre-Facet, Transition-to- Facet and Facet periods. Facet Period is divided into the Restricted Facet Formula Period, the Generalised Facet Formula Period and the two Relativity periods-viz Dorking and Elsinore periods. Under each period, major achievements in library classification and the social factors leading to them them are described. Discusses research in the idea, verbal, and notational planes; building of schedules of Common Isolates, and Depth Classification of diverse subjects. The study by Eric H. Johnson publishedin this volume is inspired by this paper.
