Abstract

Second part of Eugene Garfield's article 'A Tribute to S.R.Ranganathan, the Father of Indian Library Science’ originally appeared in 'Current Contents' and late volume seven of ‘Essays of an Information Scientist'. The present essay attempts to evaluate Ranganathan's contributionsto areas like professionalizing Library Science, invention of fundamental categories, influence of his ideas in classification and indexing theory, and discusses some parallels between his work and cocitation clustering. It reveals that his ideas are relevant in this digital era and his influence will continue. An appendix that describes Ranganathan's classification system, Colon Classification follows this paper.
