1(1881-1960) was initially a member of a small but remarkable group of librarians who gave some measure of distinction to the British public library service during the early decades of the present century. Most of his career was spent with Croydon Public Libraries, first as deputy to Librarian; Stanley Jast, and then as Chief Librarian. But his work as a practising librarian, though well above average, and in its day outstanding in the provision of library services for children, was eclipsed by his success as a writer and teacher of librarianship, particularly in the field of library classification. He has authored the books; Canons of classification, An Introduction To Library Classification, A Short Course In Practical Classification and numerous, edited volumes, popular articles especially on library services for children.

Abstract

S R Ranganathan did his internship in Library Science at the Croynon Public Library under Berwick Sayers. From then on Ranganathan maintained close contact with Sayers. It was a highly productive relation, which influenced crucial developments in technical aspects of the profession especially in the field of knowledge classification in following decades. This is an assessment of the personality of Ranganathan by one of the greatest information scientists of the time who was also Ranganathan’s teacher.
