Abstract

The paper discusses the role of village libraries forming part of public library system (PLS). They are most important for empowering the citizens and in narrowing the digital divide and reducing information poverty in the society. As the world is evolving into a networked society, a country can achieve sustainable development only by removing information poverty. PLS in combination with social media offers hitherto unavailable possibilities for extending the reach of government schemes and services unto the grassroots level. Public libraries need to be scientifically remodeled into community information service centers where people can get information, knowledge, education, and guidance on any aspect that they require in leading a worthy life. Qualified and trained librarian should man these centres. Thus, village libraries need to be place in an important position as organs of government to interact and support the disadvantaged population also in validating equal chances in the society.
