Open Source Software (OSS) available for digital archiving and the management of library housekeeping operations brought revolutionary changes in libraries around the world irrespective of their nature, size and financial condition. The paper identifies the major OSS available for library automation and describes their functional characteristics; Explains the advantages of adopting OSS for library automation; Identifies the issues and challenges in adopting them in the libraries; and Opines that integrated library systems in open source streams are ideal for libraries in developing countries where quality information services are constrained due to budgetary restrictions. Author observes that; Only a few OSS are active that are updated frequently though many OSS are available; In Indian libraries, use of OSS is due to the personal efforts of some professionals; Lack of technical knowledge and support, shortage of skilled manpower to install and maintain the software are the major challenges in embracing OSS in the Indian libraries. Author opines that more familiarization programs on their use and advanced hands-on training in each module of OSS is essential to encourage their adoption.
