Advances in technology have transformed libraries from records in palm leaves to documents in cyberspace. Libraries are changing from priced traditional documents to freely accessible digital collections. The use of new technologies has become a crucial factor for libraries to remain active as providers of information. Most of the library’s day-to-day tasks are completed through Open Source technology. Technologies within this category include digital libraries, integrated library systems, content management systems, OPAC, and citation management. These software tools now allow librarians to provide innovative services to their valued patrons without spending an excessive amount of money. Open Source Systems give LIS professionals new tools and empower libraries. This paper discusses the most popular and leading Open Source Software used in libraries and points out their advantages and limitations with several examples of popular Open Source packages in use.
