Abstract

It is well known that rock bolting is one of the primary supporting schemes, which has been widely used in rock engineering for maintaining the profile of large rock caverns and tunnels. Over the last few decades, conventional tunnelling methods (i.e., drill and blasting tunnelling method or the new Austrian tunnelling method) have been frequently used in the construction of large tunnels/caverns, especially under severe geological conditions (e.g., high overburden, extremely shallow tunnel cover, unsymmetrical earth pressure/anisotropic stress condition and large cross-section). Therefore, rock bolting has become a more essential component in tunnel design.
