Rockfall mitigation measures with the goal of lessening the effect of probable rockfall events in a identified vulnerable locations are being used in various infrastructure projects including power sector in view of authorities increased acceptance of such solutions. The various rockfall mitigation measures as defined in IRC: HRB -special report 23 such as warning measures, protection measures (such as simple drapery system, berms, dynamic rockfall barriers etc.), retention measures such (as secured drapery system) and prevention measures (such as drainage measures, blasting, and trimming techniques etc.) can be selected based on applicability in various site situations. The case study presented is of the rockfall mitigation project involving rockfall protection measures and rockfall retention measures installed near and above one of the tunnel portal locations of Teesta Stage-III Hydropower project. The site details, engineering investigations carried out, brief analysis and design of various mitigation measures, construction activities, maintenance etc are presented.
