Abstract

The occurrence of heavy metal resistant bacteria in drinking water indicates the contamination of water with heavy metals and indirectly it also shows the occurrence of antibiotic and drug resistant bacteria. In the present investigations, an attempt was made to assess the occurrence of heavy metal resistant bacteria in the drinking water sources of Warangal city (AP). The results revealed that all the drinking water sources were found to contain the heavy metal resistant bacteria. Further, they were found to be resistant at lower concentration of the metals. However, at higher concentrations, heavy metals inhibited the growth of bacteria.
