Abstract

Water is essential for all living organisms on this planet. Its demanded in safe quality and sufficient quantity in most of the sectors such as Domestic, Agriculture, Manufacturing, Energy, etc. Growth in population, industrialization, urbanization, water intensive agriculture is putting immense pressure on the quantity and quality of water. Poor water quality has adverse effects on health, especially in children and women. Hence, this study was taken up to evaluate the quality of water, and the Rakaskop Reservoir drinking water samples were gathered from ten sampling stations in Belagavi City. The water was analyzed for ten parameters and the results compared with the specifications proposed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for drinking water. The Water Quality Index (WQI) was constructed using the ten parameters coupled with BIS standards and analyzed for assessing the drinking water in Belagavi City.
