Assessment of Groundwater Quality for Drinking and Irrigation use in the Shallow Hard Rock Aquifer of Domalapally Watershed, Nalgonda District, Telangana State

Abstract

A set of 21 groundwater samples were collected from the Domalapally Watershed in Nalgonda district based on geological, geomorphological and hydrogeological factors for evaluation of groundwater quality for drinking and irrigational use in a hard rock shallow aquifer region. The physico-chemical parameters and major ion chemistry of the collected samples were analyzed. Wilcox (1955) plot suggests that most of the samples are within the limits permissible for drinking and irrigational use. Further, the suitability of water for irrigation was determined by analyzing sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), sodium percent, Kelly’s ratio, (1940) (KR), soluble sodium percentage (SSP) and permeability index (PI). It is suggested that, water from the study area is not suitable for drinking and analytical results also indicate that it can put to only irrigational use. A few samples which exceed the permissible limits due to anthropogenic activities are not useful either.
