Assessment of Heavy Metal Contamination in Soils Around Narsampet Area, Warangal District, Telangana, India

Abstract

Concentrations of As, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sr, Y, Zn and Zr were determined to study the distribution of these metals in soils of Narsampet area of Warangal district. These heavy metals occur naturally in soils, formed by geological processes. Nine soil samples were collected from the study area from a depth of 15 cms from the surface. Heavy metals were analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry by following standard methods. The results have revealed that the soils in the study area are significantly contaminated, showing high levels of toxic elements than the normal. The ranges of concentrations of these metals are: As (3.6-7ppm), Ba (637.3-2600.5ppm), Co (7.8-28.3ppm), Cr (58.6-122.8ppm), Cu (6-41.5ppm), Mo (.4-2.5ppm), Ni (1.5-14.7) Pb (14.1-47.2), Rb (58.9-96.9), Sr (150.4-643.3), V (78.3-462.8ppm)Y (28.5-60.5), Zn (75.5-314.5) and Zr (290-1087.9).
