Abstract

The present study was designed to observe and compile the biochemical alterations that occur during induction of chronic cold stress and ameliorating effect of aqueous extract of Chlorophytum borivilianum and Ascorbate supplementation on lipid metabolism in rats using chronic cold restraint stress model. The study comprised of four groups of experimental male Wistar albino rats; group I (control), group II (stress), group III (stressed with Chlorophytum borivilianum @ 250 mg/kg body weight), group IV (stressed with Ascorate @ 200 mg/kg body weight). The blood and tissue homogenates (liver and kidney) were collected and analyzed for different biochemical parameters. The results of present study showed significant rise in triglycerides, cholesterol, and LPO in all the samples in stress induced rats as compared to control animals and found significant reduction in these indices near to control following treatment with Chlorophytum borivilianum and Ascorbate. On the other hand vitamin E reduced significantly in blood and tissue homogenates in stress induced rats than control group. However, Chlorophytum borivilianum and Ascorbate supplementation did not affect the level of vitamin E in blood as well as tissue homogenates. The findings of the present experiment indicated that both Chlorophytum borivilianum and Ascorbate supplementation in chronic cold restraint stressed rats reduces stress induced lipid alterations and also suppresses the free radical mediated damage thereby retarding stress associated degenerative changes.
