In the present study isolation and identification were undertaken for Listeria. A total 50 mutton samples were cultured and characterized by biochemical and serological tests. We found only one isolate was positive for Listeria. Among Listeria spp. it was confirmed as L. innocua recovered from muscle isolates. The purpose of this research was to ascertain the rate of pathogenic Listeria spp. in mutton at Mhow slaughter house and local shops but there is no any pathogenic bacteria found in samples. Therefore, present study suggests that the meat is safe for human consumption in Mhow and surrounding areas.
