In the present paper, experiments have performed to investigate the friction and wear behavior of graphite particles and biodiesel as an additive for improving wear and friction properties of SAE 15W-40 engine oils. This mixture of biodiesel, graphite particles and engine oil is specially designed to reduce the coefficient of friction and wear between the piston ring and piston cylinder material tribopair. Equal amount of graphite and biodiesel with lubricating oil were used to prepare three blends of 0.05 vol%, 0.1 vol% and 0.2 vol% and pin on disc experiments were performed to evaluate the wear and friction properties. It is observed that 0.1 vol.% of blend resulted in better wear and friction properties as compared to the other mixtures. Wear rate of piston ring material was observed to decrease due to the presence of graphite nanoparticles. The graphite nanoparticles may act as a solid lubricant and when mixed with biodiesel and lubricating oil it enhances the lubrication propertythus reduces both wear and scuffing.
