Conversion of Sugarcane Bagasse Cellulose and Hemicellulose into Sugars Using Electron Beam Irradiation

Abstract

Sugarcane bagasse is an abundant source of cellulose and hemicellulose that could be hydrolyzed to yield large amount of reducing sugars. Sugarcane bagasse was irradiated with electron beam radiation at a dose rate of 2.5 kGy/pass. Total dose was varied from 0 - 1000 kGy, and the reducing sugars were evaluated using DNS and HPLC method. The TGA/DTA results revealed about thermal degradation of hemicelluloses and cellulose of bagasse using irradiation. The total reducing sugars estimated by DNS method increased by 11% at 1000 kGy radiation dose and HPLC profiling shows the presence of both five and six carbon sugars. However, irradiation with ionizing initiators like APS did not show any promising effect with e- beam irradiation but using PPS initiator showed 22% and 20% increase in reducing sugars.
