Effect of Waste Cooking oil Biodiesel on Agricultural Diesel Engine

Abstract

Because of the anxiety of the global community about increasing pollution and gasoline prices at rapid rate have enforced the progress of substitute fuel for automobiles. The feasibility of using waste cooking oil biodiesel (WCME) as an alternative fuel to diesel has been targeted in this work. Performance and emission tests were carried out on a four stroke single cylinder CI engine using various biodiesel blends (WCME05, WCME10, WCME15 & WCME20) obtained from waste cooking oil and compared with baseline diesel oil. Transesterification reactions were carried out for the production of waste cooking oil biodiesel using waste cooking oil obtained from college restaurants, methanol and potassium hydroxide as a catalyst. Fats are heated at 110–1150C to convert it into the oil and to remove the moisture using. The separation of glycerin is done by water washing method then heating of biodiesel was done to remove the moisture. WCME blends showed higher brake thermal efficiency (BTE) up to 29% (4% higher than diesel) and lower brake specific energy consumption (BSEC) than baseline diesel. Carbon monoxide (CO), oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions and smoke opacity were relatively lower while hydrocarbons (HC) were relatively higher from WCME blends compared to baseline diesel.
