A Review on Butanol as a CI Engine Fuel

Abstract

Nitrogen oxide (NOx) and smoke are found to be the most critical emissions from diesel engines which cause serious environmental degradation when liberated in the atmosphere. Alcohol contains large amount of oxygen and have great potential to reduce exhaust emissions. Butanol is a very promising fuel covered in this review, namely n-butanol. Based on the published literatures available, this study focuses on the performance of the compression ignition (CI) engine which comprises brake thermal efficiency and brake specific fuel consumption. Exhaust gas temperature effects were also analysed for the butanol content in the fuel blends along with the major exhaust emissions of butanol blend in CI engine, for example, NOx, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and smoke.
