Influence of Methyl Palmitate and Methyl Oleate Blending on Oxidation Stability of Jatropha Biodiesel

Abstract

The exhaustive nature of traditional energy sources influences every nation to switch its vision towards the development of alternative fuels. Biodiesels are fuels derived from edible and non-edible oils that are receiving increased attention as replacement fuels. Biodiesels are fatty-acid methyl esters, generally produced by transesterification of vegetable oils and animal fats. The oxidation stability (OS) of biodiesels is a significant parameter which needs utmost attention for its usage. In the present study, OS of Jatropha biodiesel has been analysed after blending it with methyl palmitate (MP) and methyl oleate (MO) in different weight proportions. The results reveal that such modification in fatty-acid profile shows a significant change in the OS. The addition of MP enhanced the OS, whereas Os was declined when treated with MO. The variation in the response has been attributed to the saturated nature of MP which is contrary for MO.
