As a renewable, biodegradable and non-toxic alternative to fossil fuels, biodiesel has been given tremendous attention during the past decade. The multipurpose Jatropha curcas (JC) plant which usually can be grown on barren/unutilised land contains high amount of oil in seeds which can be converted to biodiesel. Amount of oil and its physico-chemical properties, fatty acid composition of JC are discussed in this review along with the comparison of homogenous and heterogeneous techniques of transesterification. This paper also gives an insight about the fact that for high oil yield, lipid enhancement can be done by various technical processes.
