Role of Algal Consortium for Treatment of Primary Effluent: An Approach towards Nutrient Removal and Biomass Production

Abstract

In the present study, algal consortium was cultivated in primary effluent collected from Sewage Treatment Plant (Dhani Gram, Hisar, Haryana) to evaluate its nutrient removal potential and biomass generation. Nutrient removal efficiencies were analysed on initial and final day of cultivation. Percentage of nutrients removed by algal consortium was 70.52%, 77.37%, 80%, 85.18% and 94.15% for COD, NO3, PO4, TOC and TN, respectively. Efficient removal of some metal ions Na, Ca and K was also recorded. Lipid content and biomass concentration of the consortium was assessed on alternate days. Lipid content of the sample varied from 6.02% to 28.23% dcw. Highest biomass (1.995 g/L) was recorded on the sixth day of incubation period. Results obtained from the present study revealed that municipal wastewater offers a rich source of nutrients for valuable biomass production of algae which in turn serves dual benefit of wastewater treatment as well as good valorisation potential for biofuel production..
