Development and Performance Evaluation of 300L per Batch Capacity Pilot Plant for De-waxing and De-gumming of Jatropha Oil

Abstract

Plant oils contain about 2–5% wax and gum, which need to be separated before they are either blended with diesel or converted into bio-diesel for use in CI engines. Two pilot plants for de-waxing and de-gumming of Jatropha oil (DDJO), one using liquid petroleum gas (LPG) burner and another using steam for heating oil, were designed, developed and evaluated. Both the system worked satisfactorily. The cost of DDJO using LPG burner for heating of oil and steam for heating of oil were Rs. 0.92/L and Rs. 1.25/L, respectively.
