Prevalence of multiple drug resistance Aeromonas species from chicken

The prevalence of Aeromonas species in poultry meat was assessed from different market places of Nagpur city. A total of 70 samples (50 from poultry meat and 20 from meat products) yielded 12 isolates of Aeromonas spp. (24). A. hydrophila was the predominant species in poultry meat. Antibiogrm study revealed multiple drug resistance pattern in Aeromonas species. The isolates showed complete resistance to bacitracin followed by ampicillin and oxytetracyclin. The finding of the study confirms moderate occurrence of Aeromonas hydrophila in retail source of chicken meat and therefore it should be monitored in epidemiological studies of human gastroenteritis cases considering its public health significance.
