The present study was undertaken to evaluate the seminal plasma lipid profile in buffalo and cow bulls. Twenty two breeding bulls comprising Murrah 4, Surti 5, Holstein Friesian 4, Jersey 4 and crossbred bulls 5 (Holstein Friesian ‘Gir and Jersey’ Gir with 50 to 75 % exotic inheritance) were used for the present study. The animals were kept throughout the experimental period under uniform plane of nutrition and management. The semen samples were obtained in artificial vagina aseptically from each bull at fortnightly intervals, on 7 occasions, during the experimental period. The cell free seminal plasma was collected by centrifuging the semen at 3000 rpm for 20 minutes. The average concentration of seminal plasma components obtained in Murrah, Surti, Holstein Friesian, Jersey and crossbred bulls, respectively, were: total lipids 483.95 ± 42.09, 307.24 ± 19.13, 266.25 ± 2.29, 265.46 ± 1.91, 264.51 ± 1.01 mg/dl; total cholesterol 19.37 ± 1.63, 10.07 ± 1.52, 27.82 ± 2.07, 43.80 ± 3.67, 37.37 ± 3.11 mg/dl; HDL cholesterol 16.04 ± 0.76, 12.95 ± 1.95, 25.09 ± 3.80, 33.49 ± 2.99, 30.20 ± 2.13 mg/dl; LDL cholesterol 43.09 ± 4.25, 53.10 ± 2.51, 63.16 ± 4.28, 57.09 ± 4.52, 66.73 ± 4.22 mg/dl; triglyceride 161.73 ± 24.52, 144.96 ± 9.15, 155.61 ± 27.11, 133.01 ± 19.11, 94.78 ± 9.55 mg/dl and phospholipids 138.59 ± 12.44, 151.81 ± 10.72, 204.35 ± 16.69, 184.59 ± 15.87, 165.45 ± 9.53 mg/dl. The results revealed that the seminal plasma total lipids concentration was higher in buffalo bulls when compared with cow bulls. The total cholesterol, phospholipids, HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol were lower in buffalo bulls than in cow bulls. The triglycerides concentration except in crossbreds remained almost the same in buffalo and cow bulls studied. It was lower in crossbred bulls.
