Genetic analysis on birth weight in crossbred calves

Abstract

The data on birth weight of 1103 crossbred calves of different genetics groups spread over a period of 18 years at Cattle Breeding Farm, Borgaon Manju were utilized. The effects of genetic group, sire within genetic groups, year, season and sex on birth weight were studied by the Least Square analysis of variance and all the effect found to be significant. The average body weight at birth was 18.09±0.23 kg. The crosses produced by single breed exotic inheritance with ND showed significantly low birth weight than two breeds exotic inheritance with ND. The heritability estimate for body weight at birth was 0.1680.069.
