Prevalence of Helminth Parasites in domestic pigs (Sus scrofa domestica) in Mumbai : An abattoir survey

Abstract

The survey based on examination of 501 pigs slaughtered at Deonar abattoir, Mumbai revealed 95.60% prevalence of helminth parasites. Single helminthic infection was noted in 28.74% pigs, while 66.86% had mixed infection involving two (39.92%), three (19.96%), four (5.78%) and five (1.19%) species of helminth parasites. Six species of nematodes viz, Ascarops strongylina (91.81%), Physocephalus sexalatus (40.71%), Oesphagostomum dentatum (18.76%), Ascaris suum (15.56%), Metastrongylus elongatus (1.59%) and Stephanurus dentatus (0.39%); two species of trematodes viz, Artyfechinostomum sufrartyfex (7.58%) and Fasciolopsis buski (0.19%); and three types of bladder worms viz, Cysticercus tenuicollis (9.78%); Cysticercus cellulosae (5.58%) and hydatid cysts (5.58%) were encountered.
