Abstract

Haematological profile during peripartum period was studied in 54 Mehsana buffaloes. The animals were grouped in 9 group as – 4wk, -3wk, -2wk, -1wk prepartum, on the day of parturition (0), +1wk, +2wk, +3wk and +4wk postpartum. Haematological parameters viz Erythrocyte count, Hb, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC, Leucocyte count and Platelet count were done on fully automatic haematology analyzer, Sysmex poc H – 100 i, Sysmex Corporation, U.S.A. and differential Leucocyte count was done manually. The results of various parameters were tabulated and data were statistically analysed. Parturition and lactation impose considerable stress on body and the animal tries to maintain homeostasis for its survival. It is reflected by changes in composition of blood. The results of the present study indicated higher platelet count on the day of parturition, which was the necessity on the day of parturition to control haemorrhages. The blood picture on the day of calving when compared with 1wk prepartum indicated rise in Erythrocyte count, Hb, HCT and neutrophilia on the day of calving. Thereafter a fall was noticed in all these parameters in 1wk postpartum. These changes stimulate those of moderate response to lactational stress.
