Effects of lipid free and lipid base propofol on blood gas analysis, hepatic and renal functions in dogs

Abstract

24 clinical cares of dogs presented for different major or minor surgeries were used for this study. General anesthesia was induced by intravenous administration of lipid free and lipid base propofol with or without xylazine premedication. Blood PH, pO2, pCO2, TCO2, %sO2 and HCO3 for blood gas analysis before, during peak of anesthesia and after recovery form anesthesia revealed no in any group suggesting no adverse effect of propofol (lipid free or lipid base) on cardio-pulmonary function. Also, no significant alteration was seen in Creatinine Kinase (CK), LDH, AST, ALT, serum creatinine and BUN during propofol anesthesia in any group. That also suggested that, lipid free or lipid base propofol either alone or in combination with xylazine had no significant effect on liver and kidney functions.
