Epidural analgesia was induced in 18 clinical cases in dogs presented for castration, spaying, tail amputation and herniorraphy etc. with bupivacaine, xylazine and the combination of both and was clinically evaluated. A synergistic action of bupivacaine-xylazine was reported during the study. Onset of analgesia was recorded within 2.83±0.30 min, 4.66±0.33min and 3.33±0.2min following epidural injection of bupivacaine, xylazine and its combination, respectively. Further, the quality of analgesia and degree of muscle relaxation was much better after epidural injection of bupivacainexylazine the bupivacaine or xylazine alone. None of the animal in any group showed any excitement during recovery from analgesia.
