The ovaries of 14 Gir & their crosses with HF & Jersey cows were monitored by per rectal examination and trans rectal ultrasonography for 90 days postpartum. Per rectal observations were classified as good follicular development (GFD), slight follicular development (SFD) and no palpable structure (NPS). Ultrasonographically, follicles were classified as Class I (2–5 mm), Class II (>5–9 mm) and Class III (>9mm). Total 104 ovaries were examined during the study beginning from day 16th ± 2 after calving at 8±2 days interval. When GFD was detected on the ovaries per rectally, it was compared with ultrasonographic findings, in 87.50% of the cases, where Class III follicles were detected but in 12.50% of the cases Class II follicles were seen. When SFD was detected per rectally, 35.53% ovaries showed Class I follicles, 53.95 had Class II follicles and 10.53% had Class III follicles. When NPS was detected on the ovaries on rectal palpation, all the ovaries showed follicular development on trans rectal ultrasonography. 66.67% had Class I follicles and 33.33% had Class II follicles. It is therefore concluded that, ultrasonography is a better tool to monitor ovarian activity as compared to rectal palpation.
