Abstract

The present investigation was carried out to evaluate on-campus in-service training programmes conducted by Krishi Vigyan Kendra Doda for the extension functionaries of the department of horticulture to update their knowledge and skills regarding improved production and management practices of apple and walnut crops during the year 2014–15, 2015–16 and 2016–17 using one group before and after comparison design. Horticulture Development Officers and technicians which execute the extension activities of the department constituted sample for the study. Pre-training knowledge level of the apple trainees varied from 5.0 to 47.5 per cent whereas, post-training knowledge level varied from 17.5 to 90.0 per cent. Similarly, pre-training knowledge level of the walnut trainees varied from 7.5 to 82.5 per cent, however, their post-training knowledge level varied from 30.0 to 92.5 per cent. Besides, 56.25 per cent trainees had favourable and 22.50 per cent had the most favourable opinion towards the training programmes. A significant difference in the mean knowledge score of both apple and walnut trainees about scientific production and management technologies has been found which implies that the training programmes resulted in a significant change in the knowledge level of extension functionaries. Need for more such training programmes on methods of propagation, major planting systems, disease and pest management in apple, semi dwarfing root stocks of apple, use of hormones for fruit set and preventing fruit drop and; disease management in walnut, use of hormones, management of walnut weevil and fertilizer requirement in walnut have been assessed as wide knowledge gaps even after conducting trainings have been found.
