Participation of Farm Women in Agricultural Operations: A transsection of Kannauj district of Uttar Pradesh

Abstract

Farm women play vital role in agriculture sectors by working with full passion in production of crops from soil preparation till harvesting and post harvest processing. They are the power on interface of livestock keeping with farming. Female overshadow men in a lot of spheres of agricultural and allied activities but usually their productive efforts go unrecognized. The present study was planned in two villages Digsara and Bahelianpurva of Jalalabad block in district Kannauj U.P. with purpose to investigate the women's participation in farm activities. Twenty farm women/village from each enterprise i.e. crop production, live stock and post harvest were selected for the purpose of study. The results indicate that majority of farm women were belonging to age group 35–50 years, OBC category, educated upto primary and 5–6 member nuclear families with marginal or small land holding. They were having 1015 year experience of farm activities and work in farm for 6–10 am in morning and 2–4 pm in afternoon. Major farm activities performed by women were transplanting 89.16 per cent, weeding 88.33 per cent, cutting/uprooting and picking/diffing 84.16 per cent, bundling and heaping 87.50 per cent, winnowing 85.00 per cent and inter culturing and dusting pesticide 44.16 per cent. Cent percent farm women were involved in crushing, beetling, sieving, cleaning, grading, storage of grains, feeding animal and cleaning of shed. Milking activity was also performed by 34.16 per cent farm women.
